fos4X introduced its latest retrofit solution – retroX – to the market and made the leap into the digital business. Robert Erdmann, Chief Digital Officer of fos4X, presented retroX and his vision of digitalized and optimized wind energy for the first time at Wind O&M Munich at the end of February 2019. The aspiring IIoT company fos4X now has 100 permanent employees (30 of them in the digital sector) and offers outstanding solutions in sensor technology as well as in digital business. The goal: Digital transparency and optimization of wind turbines and wind farms.
How well do you know your wind turbine?
With retroX we enable the digitization of a wind turbine in a very cost-efficient way. In order to focus on the main advantages, imagine the following situation: You have a large number of turbines that will exceed their design life in the next 5 years. A 2nd level SCADA system (operation management software) is also available, but funding to increase annual energy production (AEP) and reduce operating costs (OpEx) is limited.
The solution is retroX: with a minimum 4-digit initial investment, the system collects real-time data to optimize continued operation. The data is recorded by vibration and load sensors in the rotor blades. From there, the data is analyzed directly on site in real time or transferred to a cloud, depending on the urgency. retroX can be connected to SCADA or an existing asset management software.
Increasing the efficiency of existing turbines
retroX uses four efficient levers to increase the profitability of wind turbines. These are key benefits for the optimization of wind turbines:
- Reduce operating costs (OpEx) through optimized maintenance planning through increased visibility and automated analysis.
- Minimize and monitor risks through early detection of structural damage.
- Increase annual energy production (AEP) through recommendations for action generated by the app.
- Reliably determine and increase the service life of a turbine through an optimum operation.
X4edge Performance Apps for Optimizing Wind Turbines
fos4X offers a wide range of performance apps for the optimization of wind energy. Some of these apps are:
Rotor Ice Control
Rotor Ice Control achieves an improvement in annual energy yield (AEP) of 4-20%, depending on climatic conditions. An amortization can be achieved after only one year. As soon as the system measures a mass of ice on the rotor blades that requires the system to be switched off, an alarm is triggered. The turbine is then stopped and restarted manually or automatically (depending on the connection to the turbine control system).
Turbine Integrity Control
At Turbine Integrity Control we create a physical model of the rotor blades and calculate how their eigenfrequencies change with certain types of damage, such as cracks or detachments. In the event of changes, the system triggers an alarm and provides information on the type of damage. This allows you to act directly and keep the cost of repairs to a minimum.
Turbine Load Control
Turbine Load Control maximizes the service life of a turbine by measuring the conditions a turbine is exposed to, such as wind speed and wind force. With the help of this data, you can determine the actual load on the turbine and make decisions about a sensible retrofit of the wind turbines. The data can also be highly relevant for the analysis of the DNV-GL lifetime extension assessment process.
In addition to the performance apps presented, the fos4X product range includes Turbine Efficiency Control, Blade Noise Control and Wind Farm Control, which contribute to the optimization of wind turbines.
