Wind turbine operators get legal certainty for using a suitable sensor system for safe stopping and automatic restart of the wind turbine, to prevent damage caused by ice shedding.
Legal certainty and minimum downtime
To avoid ice shedding from the rotor blades and to ensure the safety of nearby people and equipment, the current law requires a shutdown of wind turbines when ice forms on the rotor blades.
To comply with both the legal requirements and the efficient functioning of the wind turbine, an ice detection system has to work accurately and reliably. These conditions are met by the “fos4Blade IceDetection” solution for Ice detection.

Ice detection directly on the rotor blade

Functionality of the ice detection system
Our solution for Ice detection is based on fiber optical vibration sensors for measuring vibrations of the rotor blades. An icy rotor blade is heavier and vibrates slower than an ice-free blade. Very small changes in the blade frequencies are reliably detected and the severity of icing calculated.
In addition, „free of ice“ condition can be detected at the stopped wind turbine and a restart of the system is automatically realized. This occurs even in very low winds and without visual inspection.
Inherent to lightning damage
Lightning damage is a common problem for many manufacturers of systems for monitoring of wind turbines.
Our fiber optic sensors do not conduct electricity and the housing are electrically isolated. Therefore fos4X solutions for wind turbines are inherently safe from lightning damage.
